Equity & Access

Lower tuition or provide more aid. Many students do not think MSU is attainable simply because of costs. The university has some plans for low-income students that cover all their costs. The Spartan Advantage is an example of such aid. However, the maximum allowable income to qualify for that program is so low, most working-class families do not meet the requirements, yet still need the assistance. Giving more aid to families making $70,000 or less will attract many students who, but for the costs, would otherwise be successful students at MSU.

Graduating more minoritized students will also assist in attracting minoritized students. Students need to see people who look like them successfully navigating predominantly white institutions.

Recruiting diverse faculty and staff will also assist in attracting minoritized students. Students need to see people who look like them teaching classes, directing programs that serve them, and going about their everyday campus jobs with comfort and success to feel the space is meant for them.

Recruiting diverse leadership will also assist in attracting minoritized students. Often, we make decisions with limited lenses. Diverse perspectives, experiences, and priorities help strengthen any organization. Diversity in talent is critical if we want to increase access for minoritized students. Diverse leadership will better recognize the variety of challenges whole student groups and individuals may encounter and not only increase opportunities for access, but also create structures and safeguards so that they feel included, safe, and like they belong once they come.
